New 8-Screens Multiplex At Penang Queensbay Mall

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Movie goers in Penang will be delighted to know that they are getting 8 new screens at the new Penang Queensbay Mall. Leading exhibitor Golden Screen Cinema Sdn Bhd (GSC) is kicking off the new year with a new 8-screens multiplex at the new Penang Queensbay Mall. It’s scheduled to open before Chinese New Year 2007.

The proposed 1,512 seater GSC Queensbay is also designed to cater to the needs of physically-challenged patrons.

Movie fans from mainland Butterworth will also find this a good piece of news as the new multiplex is within the vicinity of the Penang Bridge. The new multiplex will be located on the 3rd floor, south court of Queensbay Mall.

Prior to the launch of the multiplex, GSC Queensbay will be offering FREE movie screenings to the public for five consecutive days. Watch out for more details of the launch activities in the local dailies or log on to www.gsc.com.my.

Road Upgrade at Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas and Kampung Jawa

Friday, January 12th, 2007

This morning, I just received an official announcement from the HR department. Very susah this time. Reach office sure late. Now, the jam already so terrible … I guess next week I need to wake up at 6am and go office at 7am.

Road Upgrade at Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas

Dear employees,

We have recently received some news from FREPENCA regarding the above and would like to share with you so that you are able to plan your route to work accordingly and hopefully not miss any morning meetings:

JKR will be upgrading the junction of Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas and Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa. In view of this upgrading work from 13 Jan 2007 to 22 Jan 2007, vehicles from Georgetown will be unable to turn right from Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas into Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa. Also, vehicles from Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa will not be allowed to turn right into Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas. In addition, the traffic lights at this junction will be switched off.

Road users from George Town who wish to enter the FIZ Phase 3 are advised to use Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and then turn into Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa (the PSDC junction).

Road users from Georgetown who use Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas will have to make a detour into Hilir Sungai Kluang, Lintang Bayan Lepas and Medan Bayan Lepas before turning left back into Lebuhraya Bayan Lepas and then left at the Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa junction.

Location map attached.

For more information, you may refer to En Zaik (012-4209600) and En Mohamad Azman (012-5152525) of JKR.

Regards
Penang HR

Maybe I need to ask my boss whether can go back earlier if I report to work early.

They say 10 days … will they keep to their schedule ? Let’s see …

Storm is Coming To Town …

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

I just read about the storm alert via Star Online. So depressing …

Instead of Santa is coming to town, here comes the thunderstorm !

Normally, in Jan, Feb and March there will be lesser rain in Penang. But now, we were informed to be prepared for severe storms !

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven states in the northern and east coast regions of the peninsula have been issued with a yellow alert warning of thunderstorms and strong winds over the weekend.

A “tropical depression” (or cyclone) is also expected to hit Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak in the north, and Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang in the east.

Since I am staying in apartment, I guess I should not be worrying too much.

Here are my flood preparation checklist for singles :

  1. Buy more instant noodles.
  2. Buy more canned food.
  3. Finish the laundry and make sure sufficient clothes for the next 3 days.
  4. Rent or buy more DVD to pass time.
Don’t rely on ASTRO. Bad weather, the signal will be poor.
  5. Get some rubber boots.
Phua Chu Kang type will be great.

Any other thing to add ? Please comment.

Changes in EPF Account Distribution

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

This post has nothing related to travel tips or guides in Penang. It’s mainly for local Malaysian readers. I just thought of posting this as I feel that it’s post-worthy.

Anyway, starting Jan 2nd, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors will only have two accounts instead of the current three. The EPF contributions will now be channelled into Account 1 (70%) and Account 2 (30%). Current EPF contributors will have their account 3 savings incorporated into Account 2.

Therefore, with the new restructuring, EPF members will have an increase in their saving for retirement (Account 1) as well as having a larger amount for housing, education and withdrawals for medical reasons (Account 2). And for those who make their withdrawal from Account 1 before the dividend for 2006 is announced would only be paid the minimum dividend of 2.5% on the withdrawal amount.

New World Food Court Opening Soon

The New World Amusement Park in Penang will be getting a face-lift after being deserted and forgotten for years.

New World Food Court Next to Penang Swatow Lane

For those of you not familiar with the New World Amusement Park, here is a bit of historical facts I managed to gather. More fondly known to the older generations as ‘Sin Sei Kai’ in Hokkien or ‘San Sai Kai’ in Cantonese. Located near the Swatow Lane area, the New World Amusement Park was built sometime during the era of the Japanese occupation. It used to have 2 cinemas, children’s park with merry-go-rounds, small game outlets and so on. This place was one of the popular amusement spots for folks of the yesteryears. It lost its glitters some time in the early 1970s and the place was abandoned with grass growing all over.

Hawker Center Next to New World Park

Recently, there’s a project initiated to build a food court/hawker center on the area of the old New World Amusement Park. All the current hawkers along Swatow Lane are expected to move into the hawker center when the building is ready.

New World Food Court Complex at Penang Swatow Lane

The two-hectare complex is being redeveloped at a cost of RM17 million into an all-in-one location for food and entertainment. It comprises of a 28-stalls hawker center, a covered performance stage and several blocks of shop houses.

I think this new place will be a new popular hawker center among the young generations as well as tourists. It will also bring back some fond memories of yesteryears for the older generations who used to hang out there some long time ago.
